Epistemic Modals and Epistemic Modality

چکیده
1 Epistemic Possibility and Other Types of Possibility There is a lot that we don’t know. That means that there are a lot of possibilities that are, epistemically speaking, open. For instance, we don’t know whether it rained in Seattle yesterday. So, for us at least, there is an epistemic possibility where it rained in Seattle yesterday, and one where it did not. It’s tempting to give a very simple analysis of epistemic possibility:

A Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Study of Epistemic Modality Markers in Linguistics Research Articles
Epistemic modality devices are believed to be one of the prominent characteristics of research articles as the commonly used genre among the academic community members. Considering the importance of such devices in producing and comprehending scientific discourse, this study aimed to cross–culturally and cross-linguistically investigate epistemic modality markers as an important subcategory...
متن کاملWhat might be known: Epistemic modality and uncertain contexts
Epistemic modals relativize the truth value of a proposition to some body of knowledge. It is thus reasonable to consider that their truth conditions concern at least as much the attitude of the speaker(s) towards the proposition as the content of the proposition itself. Epistemic modals can be seen as evidential comments on propositions (von Fintel and Gillies 2007). Veltman (1996), Groenendij...
متن کاملEpistemic Modality, Factivity, and Relativism
The weak epistemic modal operators might, possible, likely, and probable display embedding behaviors and scope interactions that are interestingly different from their logically stronger counterparts must and certain. I present two problematic sets of facts about these operators which have not received much attention in the literature. The first is that weak epistemic modals embed freely under ...
متن کاملThe acquisition of epistemic modality
In this paper we try to contribute to the body of knowledge about the acquisition of English epistemic modal verbs (e.g. Mary may/has to be at school). Semantically, these verbs encode possibility or necessity with respect to available evidence. Pragmatically, the use of epistemic modals often gives rise to scalar conversational inferences (Mary may be at school -> Mary doesn’t have to be at sc...
متن کاملStrict Comparison and Weak Necessity: The Case of Epistemic Yào in Mandarin Chinese
The epistemic use of yào in Mandarin Chinese, often translated as ‘should’ in English, shows certain interesting peculiarities. In this paper, I first describe the empirical properties of epistemic yào. The occurrence of epistemic yào is restricted only to certain comparative constructions, but forbidden in other degree constructions or non-degree constructions. It cannot appear above or below ...
متن کاملLinguistic Modality as Expressions of Social Power
The semantics of the linguistic modals is argued to be determined mainly by the power structure of the participants in the interaction. In the deontic uses of the modals, another determining factor is the expectations of the participants’ attitudes towards the relevant action. By viewing the evidence as a power in its own right, our analysis can be generalized to the epistemic uses in a coheren...
